How to Become a Travel Agent Without Experience (And How It Changed My Life)
I want to share my last 7 years in the industry because A few years ago my life looked very different......
I was working as a mortgage broker commuting into London every day, squeezed onto a freezing cold tube, chasing targets and living paycheque to paycheque.
On paper I had a “good career”.
But the reality felt very different!
My income was capped by someone else
My time belonged to someone else
And my worth often felt defined by corporate targets and I really felt as though I was starting to spiral
At one point I had over £20,000 of debt and honestly felt stuck on a treadmill I couldn’t get off I was about to hit 30 and I had this pivotal moment where I totally reassessed my entire life. I was in a suit I couldn't afford, in a career where I felt really undervalued in a male dominated industry and the idea of working until the age of 65 to then travel the world and live my life terrified me.
I knew I needed change, my soul craved more. So, I started looking at options for turning my passion for travel into a full-time paycheck.
Fast forward a few years and life looks very different
Today I run a travel business that has generated 7 figures annually , I’ve spent time living as a digital nomad in places like Bali, and I’ve built a business that runs largely from my laptop whilst travelling the world over the last 7 years
Most importantly, I now help others learn how to build a travel business too and I want to share the travel secret with you
So if you’ve ever wondered:
How do you become a travel agent?
Can you become a travel agent without experience?
How do travel agents make money?
And can you really run a travel business from anywhere?
Let me break it down; it may be much easier than you think
How I Became a Travel Agent
Like most people, I didn’t grow up thinking I would work in the travel industry.
In fact, I didn’t even realise modern travel agents could run businesses online, not alone from my laptop in a beach side cafe in bali
When I first discovered the opportunity, what stood out to me was that you could build a travel business alongside your job and earn commission from booking travel ( and I was that girl who was sat on travel booking sites looking at holidays all day, I was already an unpaid agent)
At the time I had nothing to lose but everything to gain
So I started learning.
I began helping friends and family book holidays, learning the systems, and gradually building a client base
What started as a side income slowly grew into something much bigger than I ever imagined.
Within a few years it completely changed my financial life and who I became as a person, it gave me freedom and choices and ive been able to do things I didnt even know where possible and for that I will be forever grateful
How Do Travel Agents Make Money?
One of the most common questions people ask is:
How do travel agents actually earn?
Travel agents typically earn commission from travel suppliers.
These suppliers include:
Hotels and resorts
Cruise companies
Tour operators
Travel packages
Experiences and excursions
When a client books through a travel agent, the supplier pays the agent a commission for arranging the booking
Depending on the business model, some travel professionals also build multiple income streams, which can include:
Travel booking commissions
Like any business, income varies depending on the time, effort and consistency you put in.
Can You Become a Travel Agent Without Experience?
Yes and many people entering the travel industry today start with zero experience, with the host agency I use we provide you with all of the training and mentoring
Modern travel businesses often provide access to:
Booking platforms
Supplier partnerships
Training and education
Ongoing support and mentorship
This allows people from completely different backgrounds to enter the industry.
Many travel agents originally worked in careers such as:
Corporate roles
Healthcare
Teaching
Sales
Entrepreneurship
Stay at home mums
Coaches
Thats the thing I love the most is that anyone, can do it the business doesnt discrimate
Can You Run a Travel Business From Anywhere?
One of the reasons this industry appealed to me so much was the flexibility.
Because bookings and communication are managed online, many travel agents run their businesses remotely.
Personally, I’ve worked from places all over the world whilst Ive travelled in all sorts of dreamy places.
All you really need is a laptop, WiFi and clients who want incredible travel experiences and you can be the person to help them make their travel dreams come true
Of course, like any business, it still takes time and consistency to grow but the flexibility it offers can be life-changing
Why More People Are Becoming Travel Agents
The travel industry is one of the largest industries in the world, worth trillions globally, Travel is a product which is never going to go out of fashion, I always say places like marbella, begas, dubai may go out of fashion but travel as a whole is just going to get bigger and bigger
Despite online booking websites, demand for travel agents has actually grown again in recent years.
Why?
Because travellers increasingly want:
Expert advice
Help planning complex trips
Access to better experiences and upgrades
Someone to support them if travel plans change
Travel agents provide that personal service and expertise and its always good for when things do go wrong, your have someone at home on the ground to support you
The Benefits of Becoming a Travel Agent
For many people, becoming a travel agent isn’t just about booking holidays.
It’s about creating a lifestyle with more freedom, flexibility and opportunity.
Here are some of the biggest benefits people experience when starting a travel business.
Flexibility and Freedom
One of the biggest advantages of being a travel agent is flexibility.
Unlike traditional careers where your schedule is fixed, running a travel business can allow you to work around your life.
Many agents start part-time alongside their existing job and grow their business gradually.
You can work:
From home
Around family commitments
In the evenings or weekends
Choosing your own hours
While travelling
For many people, that flexibility is priceless, no more asking for time off you truly get to choose how you live your life and live life on your own terms
Location Freedom
Because the business operates online, many travel agents work from anywhere in the world.
For people who love travel and lifestyle freedom, this can be incredibly appealing.
All you really need is a laptop, internet connection and clients who want amazing travel experiences.
Networking and Community
One of the unexpected benefits of the travel industry is the network you build.
You connect with:
Other travel professional
Entrepreneurs and business owners
Team trips and conventions
Clients who share your love of travel
We are one of the most supportive communities of like-minded entrepreneurs building businesses together and I love it I have made so many friends from this business
Financial Independence
Travel agents have the opportunity to create additional income streams through travel bookings and other opportunities depending on their business model
For many people this begins as a side income alongside their career.
But over time, with consistency and growth, it can develop into something much bigger like mine did, remember I only started for an extra £500 and 7 years later its a 7 Figure income so you never know how far It will grow
Building a business that generates income beyond a traditional salary can create opportunities for greater financial independence and its why I always say our business model is one of the best in the world.
Personal Growth
Starting a business changes you the person I am today, is not the person I was when I first started
You learn new skills such as:
Sales and marketing
Communication and leadership
Problem solving
Confidence and resilience
For many people, becoming a travel agent isn’t just about travel; it’s about personal growth and stepping into a bigger version of themselves. Its one big paid personal development journey
Is Becoming a Travel Agent Worth It?
For me, becoming a travel agent completely changed my life.
It allowed me to move from commuting into London every day and feeling financially stuck…
To building a flexible business that has given me more freedom and choices in life and it can do the same for you
But like any business, results depend on the time, energy and consistency you put into it.
For many people it starts as a side income opportunity and then grows from there
